The Tohoku Rokusai Marche 2026, a large regional market scheduled for Aug. 15–16 at Big Palette Fukushima in Koriyama, was abruptly canceled in an announcement made on Aug. 13. Organizers described the decision as the result of consultations with the venue but provided no detailed public explanation, leaving roughly 250 planned vendors and ticket holders facing immediate disruption. The cancellation has drawn critical posts on social media and raised questions about event planning and vendor protections ahead of other tour dates.
Event Canceled Two Days Before Opening
The organizer posted a notice at 5 p.m. on Aug. 13 saying the Koriyama stop of the Tohoku Rokusai Marche 2026 would not proceed as scheduled. The market had been advertised as one of the largest in the Tohoku region, with a lineup that included handmade goods, food stalls and stage programs.
The venue for the two-day event was Big Palette Fukushima, a large multipurpose facility in Koriyama, and the market had been promoted to draw customers from across the region. Local vendors and visitors say many had already made travel and logistics arrangements in anticipation of the opening.
Organizer ERU JAPAN’s Statement and Next Steps
The event was organized by ERU JAPAN, a limited company based in Sagae, Yamagata Prefecture, which began recruiting vendors in spring. In its brief announcement the company apologized for the late notice and said the cancellation followed discussions with the venue, while promising to disclose details at a later date.
ERU JAPAN told reporters it will refund vendor fees and pre-sold admission tickets, and that it is conducting hearings about additional losses such as hotel cancellation penalties and costs of prepared materials. The company also indicated it will consider future events more cautiously, without committing to a timetable for follow-up information.
Vendors Report Confusion and Financial Losses
About 80 percent of the scheduled exhibitors were small-scale handmade and retail vendors, with vendor fees set between 5,500 and 17,000 yen. Many sellers said they learned of the cancellation via the event’s website or social media and expressed confusion over how refunds and compensation will be handled.
Some vendors traveled from the Kanto region and as far away as Aomori, while a large proportion were based in Fukushima Prefecture. Social media posts from affected stalls described last-minute travel, prepared inventory and booking costs that organizers have begun to document in order to assess claims.
Tour Track Record and Planned Scale in Fukushima
The Tohoku Rokusai Marche series staged three prior events this year, drawing thousands of visitors to other prefectures. The tour’s earlier stops were held on May 2–3 in Yamagata, June 20–21 in Akita and July 18–19 in Aomori, with each two-day venue hosting roughly 60 to 100 vendors and attracting more than 5,000 attendees across those dates.
Organizers said the Koriyama event was intended to surpass those earlier editions in scale, with about 250 exhibitors expected to participate. The sudden cancellation therefore represents a substantial change in plan for both the promoter and local economies that had anticipated visitor traffic and sales.
Future Dates in Iwate and Miyagi Remain Unclear
ERU JAPAN listed additional Tohoku Rokusai Marche dates for later in the year, with Iwate slated for Nov. 7–8 and Miyagi for Dec. 12–13, but the website currently shows venues for those stops as undecided. In light of the Koriyama development, the organizer said it will approach future bookings and venue confirmations with increased caution.
Local officials and prospective venue operators have not publicly commented on whether they were involved in the decision to cancel the Koriyama market. The uncertainty over fall and winter stops has prompted vendors and local promoters to monitor announcements closely.
Public Reaction and Alternative Local Events
Reaction on social media ranged from criticism of the late notice to practical responses from the seller community. Several vendors posted that they planned ad hoc sales or pop-up gatherings to avoid leaving perishable stock unused and to recoup some sales lost by the cancellation.
Some community groups and local businesses signaled openness to hosting replacement activities, while others urged ERU JAPAN to provide clear timelines for refunds and for disclosure of the reasons leading to the venue consultation that resulted in cancellation. Consumer groups and event-industry observers noted that transparent communication is central to maintaining trust when large regional events are called off on short notice.
ERU JAPAN has committed to refunding stand fees and pre-sale ticket purchases and said it will collect information from affected vendors on additional costs. Many exhibitors and ticket buyers have indicated they will await written confirmation of refund procedures and a fuller explanation before deciding on future participation in the Tohoku Rokusai Marche series.
