Vermeer exhibition ticket sales moved to lottery after presale system failure
Osaka museum shifts Vermeer exhibition ticket sales to a Ticket Pia lottery for all dates after presale access problems; applications open July 14–21.
The Osaka Nakanoshima Museum said on June 30, 2026, that Vermeer exhibition ticket sales will be changed from staggered first-come, first-served releases to a lottery system for the entire run of the Vermeer "Girl with a Pearl Earring" exhibition. The change follows system instability during a recent presale in June that left many prospective visitors unable to complete purchases. Organizers apologized for the disruption and announced that timed-entry regular tickets for the August 21–September 27 exhibition will be allocated primarily by draw through Ticket Pia, with applications open from July 14 to July 21.
Details of the new lottery arrangement
The museum confirmed that the previously planned split sales in three successive phases have been cancelled and replaced by a single lottery for tickets covering the full exhibition period.
All standard timed-entry tickets will be sold through Ticket Pia’s lottery process, and the application window is set for July 14–21, 2026. The museum said that further particulars, including how winning applicants will be notified and how payments will be handled, will be provided by Ticket Pia and on the exhibition’s official channels.
Reason for the shift: presale access overload
Organizers attributed the decision to severe access concentration during the earlier presale that caused ticketing systems to become unstable and intermittent.
Officials said the instability prevented many customers from completing purchases and created congestion that undermined a fair distribution of tickets, prompting the move to a draw-based system intended to reduce peak online traffic and ensure equitable access.
Provisions for those without internet access
To accommodate people who cannot apply online, the museum announced plans to accept postal applications by return postcard for the same lottery, with detailed instructions to be released shortly.
The postal option is specifically intended for applicants lacking reliable internet access and will be administered alongside the Ticket Pia online draw so that those applicants can participate under equivalent terms.
On-site sales suspended; additional lotteries possible
The museum stated that same-day ticket sales at the venue will be discontinued for the duration of the exhibition.
Depending on overall demand and sales patterns, additional Ticket Pia lottery rounds may be scheduled to release more tickets, and organizers said any extra draws would be publicized in advance.
Resale rules and measures against illegal transfer
Organizers reiterated a strict ban on unauthorized ticket resale and said that any tickets found to have been resold improperly will be voided and holders will be denied admission without exception.
To reduce the incentive for illicit transfers, Ticket Pia will operate an official resale service that allows purchasers of both the June presale tickets and tickets acquired in the July and later lotteries to return tickets for sale to other prospective visitors through an authorized channel.
What visitors should know before applying
Applicants should prepare to enter the Ticket Pia draw during the July 14–21 window and make sure they meet any identity or payment requirements set by the ticketing platform.
The museum advised potential visitors to monitor official exhibition communications for the postal application format, deadlines, and any identity verification procedures tied to the timed-entry system and resale service.
Organizers emphasized that the shift to a lottery is intended to make Vermeer exhibition ticket sales fairer and more reliable after the June presale disruption, and they expressed appreciation for public patience as new procedures are implemented.
